Background of the Study

Obesity has become a global health concern, significantly contributing to the rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In Gombe State, the increase in obesity rates, especially among urban populations, has paralleled the growing burden of heart disease. Obesity is known to exacerbate several risk factors for heart disease, including hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. The accumulation of excess body fat, particularly visceral fat, promotes inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which are strongly associated with heart disease. This study aims to examine the relationship between obesity and heart disease in Gombe State, with a focus on identifying the mechanisms by which obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular conditions.

Statement of the Problem

Obesity is a significant public health issue in Gombe State, and its increasing prevalence is contributing to the rise in heart disease cases. However, the relationship between obesity and heart disease in this specific region remains under-researched. Understanding how obesity contributes to heart disease is crucial for developing targeted interventions aimed at reducing both obesity and its associated cardiovascular risks. This study will provide important insights into the link between obesity and heart disease in Gombe State, aiding in the formulation of effective public health strategies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the relationship between obesity and heart disease in Gombe State.
  2. To identify the key factors linking obesity to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in Gombe State.
  3. To recommend lifestyle interventions aimed at reducing obesity and its cardiovascular impacts in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between obesity and heart disease in Gombe State?
  2. How does obesity contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in Gombe State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce obesity-related heart disease risks in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Obesity is significantly associated with an increased risk of heart disease in Gombe State.
  2. Individuals with higher body mass indices (BMIs) are more likely to have cardiovascular diseases in Gombe State.
  3. Lifestyle modifications targeting obesity will significantly reduce the incidence of heart disease in Gombe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on adults aged 18 years and older in Gombe State, including both obese and non-obese individuals. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported weight and height data and difficulty in isolating obesity as the sole cause of heart disease, as other factors like genetic predisposition and environmental influences may play a role.

Definitions of Terms

  • Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat, typically defined by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
  • Heart Disease: A range of conditions affecting the heart, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and congestive heart failure.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI): A measure of body fat based on height and weight, used to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
